Maureen and Sean ‘Feeney’ Gallagher would like to thank everyone who joined them for a recent birthday celebration at ‘Teach Frainc’, Min -an –Iolair. There was a large crowd and everyone enjoyed the music of the Tory Céilí Band and DJ Gerry Diver. The celebrations also doubled as a charity event and €3,000 was collected for Friends of Letterkenny General Hospital and The Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Maureen would like to thank all those who contributed as well as all those who helped in any way to make the event a tremendous success.
A special thanks to Mac’s Mace, and Staff, High Rd Letterkenny whom provided the Catering Service. The Tory Céilí Band, Pol Mac Ruaidhrí, Daniel Cullen, Hugo Boyle, and Colm Rodgers came across the sea and provided a feast of music, a very special thanks to them.

Wedding

The Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunlewey was the setting for the pretty wedding of Mairéad Nic Giolla Bhríde, Strand Road, Magheraclogher and James O’Neill, Killarney, Co.Kerry which took place on Saturday 3rd August last. Mairéad is a daughter of Owenie Beag and Evelyn  McBride and James is a son of Timmie and Kathleen O’Neill. The bridesmaids were: Annemarie, Noreen and Louise McBride, sisters of the bride. The best man was Brendan O’Neill, brother of the groom and groomsmen were: John Joe Brosnan and Michael Nolan, friends of the groom. The flower girls were, Aoife Kennedy, Éadaoin Kennedy, and Evie Rose O’Neill. The page boy was Oisín O’Neill. The wedding ceremony and Nuptial Mass was performed by Fr. Brian Ó Fearraigh, C.C., and Séiplíneach Phobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair. The lessons were read by: Martina Lynch and Ray O’Neill and the prayers of the faithful were read by: Charles Diver, Maeve O’Neill, Charles Sweeney, Aisling O’Neill, Paul Kavanagh and Siobhan Sweeney. A beautiful reflection was delivered by Helen O’Neill. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by: Evelyn McBride, mother of the bride and Kathleen O’Neill, mother of the groom. Music during the mass was provided by, Paula Gillespie, Pat Duffy and Róisín Uí Dhomhnaill. The reception was held in Ostán Ghaoth Dobhair, Bunbeg, and the newly wed couple are living in Dublin. Is é ár nguí go mbeidh saol sona, sásta, agus slaintiúil ag Mairéad agus James i gcuideachta a chéile.

Appointed Manager

Congratulations to Caitlín Bean Uí Dhugáin, Mín a Loch, Cnoc Fola on her appointment as manager of Naíolann Ghaoth Dobhair, the creche which is based on Páirc Ghnó Ghaoth Dobhair. Caitlín [née McFadden] who is originally from Bun a’ Leaca has spent twenty five years working with children. For the past twelve years she has been Director of Naíonra Chnoc Fola. Prior to that she was Cuntóir Ranga at Scoil Bhríde, Meenacladdy.  She is a member of Coiste Forbartha Chnoc Fola and for the past eleven years she has worked with the local youth club, Club Óige Chnoc Fola. We wish Caitlín every success in her new appointment.

Death of Mary O’Hagan

The death took place peacefully at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow on Sunday 25th August of Mrs. Mary O’Hagan. Mary, who was a member of the Ferry family, was originally from Brinaleck, Gaoth Dobhair. She was married to Willie O’Hagan who hailed from Buncrana and she was aged 89 years at the time of her death. She spent many years living in Glasgow but she never lost contact with her birth place and paid an annual visit her beloved Brinaleck.  She was predeceased by her husband and also by her son, George. She is survived by her son, Patrick, daughter in law, Patricia O’Hagan, grandson, Conor, grand daughter, Sarah, family circle, relatives and many friends, to all of whom deep condolences are extended. Reception and vigil took place at Holy Cross Church, Dixon Avenue on Sunday, 1st September at 6pm. Her funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, 2nd September at 9.30am and afterwards her interment took place to the Linn Cemetery, Lainshaw Drive, Scotland.

Whist Drive is Back

The whist drive resumes again after the summer break in Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg on Monday 9th September at 8.30p.m. The whist will be held in the school every Monday night during the winter and everyone is welcome.

Social Media Bootcamp

Social Media Bootcamp will take place in Ionad Naomh Pádraig, Dobhar on Wednesday, October 2nd starting at 10.30a.m. The cost is €25. Can’t manage to upload photos from your phone to your Facebook account? Not sure what a hash tag is? Confused as how best to advertise your events on social media? If you answer ‘yes’ to the above questions, then this workshop is definitely for you! The aim of the Social Media Bootcamp is to help you become fully competent in the use of social media. You will learn how to use the many functions of the social media platforms and learn how to maximize them to promote the work of your organisation.

Forristal School of Dance

Classes restart on: Monday 9th September: Teach Jack Glassagh, Tuesday 10th : Naomh Mhuire Annagry, Wednesday 11th: Teach Jack, Thursday 12th: Teach Jack. The Late Neily Greene

The death of Neily Greene which occurred in Tenerife last week was learned of with deep regret in the parish of Gaoth Dobhair where he was well known. Aged 68 years, he worked as a videographer for many years, and would have captured the weddings of many Gaoth Dobhair couples. Two of his daughters are living in Gaoth Dobhair. A native of Loughanure, he was an ardent Glasgow Celtic supporter and attended many matches in Park Head. He and his wife, Tess used to spend much time in their second home at Tenerife. His remains were transferred to his home in Loughanure on Thursday and his funeral mass was celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Annagry on Saturday and his interment took place afterwards to Annagry cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Tess, son Neil, three daughters, Maureen, Caitríona and Róisín, grand children, in-laws,  family circle, relatives and friends.

Grúpa Gasóga Ghaoth Dobhair

The Registration evening for the recently formed Scout Group – Grúpa Gasóga Ghaoth Dobhair, 22ú Dún na nGall, will take place on Monday 9th September in the GAA clubhouse, Magheragallon, at 6.30pm.  All those who are interested are welcome and Kevin Ferguson from Scouting Ireland will give a presentation on Scouting.  The cost of registration is €50 per child. Initially they will be running: Beavers, Age 6 to 8, Cubs age 9-11 and Scouts age 12-15.
The aim of scouting is to encourage the social, physical, intellectual, character, emotional and spiritual development of young people so that they may achieve their full potential and, as responsible citizens, improve society. Scouts is all about doing something fun and challenging with your friends. It is about learning skills that enable you to fully explore and enjoy our great outdoors.

Church Gate Collection

The annual church gate collection in aid of the Donegal Association of Parents and Friends of People with Intellectual Disabilities which took place at the churches in the parish on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August raised the sum of €1,505. The organising committee wish to thank everyone who contribute and also all the collectors who helped out during the collection.

Winners

At the weekly bingo session in Kincasslagh on Friday night two Gaoth Dobhair people won €100 each. They were: James Lennon, Knockastolar and Danielle Harley, Srath Máirtín.
Astro pitch to be replaced
Gweedore Celtic FC is to replace the surface of their astro turf pitch at an Screabán. This development would not be possible, only for the generosity of the people of  Gaoth Dobhair. The local people both business and private are always willing to contribute where the development is in aid of the youth in the area. The club was one of the first clubs in the county to develop  an astro turf pitch. It will cost in the region of €80,000 to €100,000 to renew the pitch.

Photo Competition

Údarás na Gaeltachta is running a photo competition called ‘Is álainn í an Ghaeltacht’ to promote the Gaeltacht as an ideal place to live, work, do business and as a holiday destination. Fourteen photos are showcased on www.udaras.ie The shortlist appears on Facebook and the public are invited to vote for their favourite entry by ‘Liking’ the photo. The winners will be decided through a combination of a judging panel and public popularity on Facebook (50% marks from judges and 50% from public vote). Voting will close on Tuesday, 10 September at 5pm. Votes after the deadline will not be accepted. The winner of the competition will be announced on Facebook on 13 September. Among those who has a picture selected is keen snapper, Dónall Ó Fearraigh, who is originally from Sheskinbeg and who has been living in London for many years. The entry with the highest number of votes at the time of going to press is an image ‘Cliff Climbing on Tory Island’ taken by Aidan Mac Fhionnlaoich from Annagry. Aidan has strong ties with Gaoth Dobhair. His father, Seán, a retired school teacher is originally from Bunbeg. First prize in the competition is €500, second prize €250 and third prize is €100.

Dance classes resume on Monday 9th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th September in Teach Jack Glassagh and on Tuesday 10th in Naomh Mhuire clubhouse Annagry.Classical Ballet Modern Tap and HipHop classes are available for Age 3years to teenagers.

Zumba Fitness

Exercise Programme
The Green Prescription Exercise programme supported by the HSE will commence in Ionad Naomh Pádraig on Monday 9th September at  4 pm. This programme is being piloted in County Donegal and is based on the idea that physical activity in nature results in positive outcomes for both physical and mental health.
The Green Prescription Programme involves a 12 week community walking programme which consists of two parts, an initial 4 week green steps programme (indoor) followed by an 8 week leader led community walk. For further information please contact the Centre on 074 9532949 or 086 8259752
