The death took place in Manchester last week of Mr. Owenie Coyle. The deceased, who was aged 64 years, was of Gaoth Dobhair parentage. His late father, Charlie Eoghain Coyle was a native of Lunniagh while his late mother, Mary Bheag Shéamuis Hiudaí [née O’Donnell] hailed from Bunbeg. A plumber by trade, Owenie frequently visited the area in former years. His wife, Margaret is originally from Cloughaneely. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Mary Coyle, and by his brother, Michael and sister, Mary. His funeral arrangements were not finalised at the time of going to press.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, son, Thomas, daughter, Sonya, grandchildren, uncles, Patrick Coyle [Navan], Joe and Manus O’Donnell [Ballybofey], aunt, Annie living in the United States, a large number of cousins, relatives and friends, to all of whom deep sympathy is extended in their loss.

Club 100 CLG

Winners of the 100 CLG Ghaoth Dobhair Club for the month of July were: €400, Fr. Donnchadh Ó Baoill, C.C., Cnoc Fola, €250, Máire Ní Bhaoill, An Bun Beag,   €150, Síle Uí Ghallchóir, An tArd Donn, Gaoth Dobhair, and €100 each: Alan Boyd, Coshclady, Bunbeg and Kathleen McGarvey, Mín an Iolair.

Fleadh Uladh Success

Congratulations to Catríona Ní Ghribin, Derrybeg on winning first place in the piano accordian (12 -15 years) competition at the Fleadh Uladh held in Dromore, County Tyrone on Saturday 27th July. Maith thú! Catríona is a daughter of Paul and Julia Gribben. Good luck for the All Ireland Fleadh in Derry.

Cnoc Fola Road Race

A 5K Road Race which was part of Féile Chnoc Fola took place on Friday evening.  A total of 72 people took part and the event raised the sum of €262 which will go to the Donegal Hospice. The results were: Ist in the Mens Section was  Keith Ó Fearraigh, Bun a’ Leaca, 1st in the Ladies sections was Nóirín McGee, Glassagh, 1st in the under-16 for boys was Nick Murray while 1st in the uner 16 for girls was Kayleigh Mulhern, Carrick. Michael Rodgers, Lunniaghbeg came 1st in the Adult Section.

Winners of the 5K on Gola

A 5K race which was part of Féile Ghabhla was held on the island on Saturday. The winners were: Men- 1, Denis Forker, Carrickfin, 2, Conor Sweeney, Cotteen and 3, Ben McGonagle, Carrickfin. Women: 1, Margaret Hannon, Co. Cork, 2, Anne Harkin, Carrick, 3, Caroline Ní Dhuibhir, Mín an Iolar. U-18- 1, Tiarnán O’Dea, Coshclady, 2, Adam Ó Fearraigh, Na Machaireacha. U-14:  1, Luke Gallagher, Glassagh, 2, Ethan Harkin, Carrick and 3, Joe McGee, Lunniagh. Children: winners were, Oisín Ó Duibhir, Seamus Mac Grianna, and Daniel Ó Dorrain, all of Gola.

Congratulations Clíona

Congratulations to Clíona Ní Ghallchóir, Meenacladdy who won first prize in the Amhránaíocht Gaeilge do Mhná faoi 15 at the Ulster Fleadh Cheoil Uladh held in Dromore, Co. Tyrone at the weekend. She also qualified in the Comhra Gaeilge  under 15 section. A daughter of  Denis and Rosalie Ó Gallchóir she will now be competing at the All Ireland Fleadh which will take place in Derry shortly.

Golf Draw

Galf Chumann Ghaoth Dobhair draw for the month of July took place in Golf Clubhouse, Magheragallon on Sunday and the lucky winners were:  €250 Emmet Mc Gee, €100,  Áine Mc Bride and Brian Doherty. The following won €50 each:   Rory Mangan, Nora Doherty and Declan Ferry.

Irish Wheelchair Association

The sum of €1,574-71 in aid of the Irish Wheelchair Association was recently raised outside the churches in the parish. The organisers wish to thank the people of the parish for their generous contribution.

Person of the Year

Congratulations to Nabla Coyle, Bunaninver who was selected as the Person of the Year at this year’s Féile Thraidisiúnta Chnoc Fola. Nabla. A retired national school teacher, she spent most of her teaching career at Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg. She has had a long association with Coiste Forbartha Chnoc Fola and the award was presented to her in recognition for the diligent work and contribution while serving on the committee.
She is also credited for forming a children’s band in the area, which had the late Nóra Mhic Mhonagáil as their tutor. She also formed a branch of the Irish Country Women Association in Bunaninver during the sixties.
She also has had a long association with the Gaoth Dobhair Credit Union. During her time as teacher at Scoil Mhuire, she established the first library in the school and spearheaded a drive to have a telephone line connected to the school.
At the opening ceremony of Féile Chnoc Fola at Teach Mhuiris, Brinaleck on Friday, Mary Jack Mhic Páidín of Coiste Forbartha Chnoc Fola presented her with a pottery tea service and flowers.

Cnoc Fola Bingo

The main prize winners at the monster bingo held in Ionad Pobail Chnoc Fola on Sunday last were: €150 each, Mary Ferry, Brinaleck, Jane McFadden, Ray, Falcarragh, Úna Ward, Curransport, Owenie McFadden, Glassagh and Máire Gallagher, Factory Road, Derrybeg.
The following won €100 each: Barney Murray, Meenlaragh, Margaret McCullough, Gortahork, Kate Rua O’Brien, Oileán Inis Bó Finne, Megan McGee, Falcarragh and Margaret McLynden, Srath na Corcra.

4K in aid of Cancer

A 4km run / walk  in aid of the North West Cancer Group will take place at Donegal Airport, Carrickfinn on Friday, August 16. Registration will start at 6pm and 4K  run / walk will commence  at 7pm. The starting point will be the Airport gate. The entry fee will be donations.

The late Henry McFadden

The death occurred in London recently of Henry McFadden. The deceased who was aged 62 years was originally from Meenalough, Cnoc Fola. He is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, three brothers and a sister.
His interment took place in London on Tuesday of this week following Requiem Mass. Condolences are extended to his wife and family circle.

Dunlewey Festival

The annual Féile an Earagail in Dunlewey is taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend. The official opening will be performed by Jason Black, who recently scaled Everest. It will take place in the community centre tonight (Friday) evening at 7.30p.m.
Music will be provided by an Crann óg and refreshments will be served. Fterwards a Night at the Races in aid of Dunlewey FC will take place in McGeady’s Bar.

Official Opening of Pier

The official opening of the refurbished Port an Chruinn Pier on Gola Island took place on Sunday last. The opening ceremony was performed by Minister of the State at the Department of Arts Culture and Gaeltacht Affairs, Dinny McGinley, T.D. His Department provided a grant aid of €90,000 to carry out the necessary work on the pier.
The work commenced in August last, and two lights were erected to make the pier more safe.
Islanders who return to Gola have welcomed the work carried out on the Port an Chruinn Pier.

Featured on TG4 tonight (Friday) evening will be the late Annie Eoghain Éamoinn Bean Uí Laoi who was a native of Dore.
The deceased was a renowned sean nós singer. The programme will be screened at 8.p.m. and it will show how her voice gave her national attention.
