Ruby Wedding Anniversary

Congratulations to Mr Liam and Mrs Sheila McGinty, Dunlewey who celebrated their Ruby Wedding Anniversary last week. Liam, who is originally from Srath na Corcra, Derrybeg and Sheila who hails from Dunlewey were married in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunlewey on the 10th July 1973. They were both working in the former carpet manufacturing plant, G.T. Carpets on the Gaoth Dobhair Industrial Estate at the time. Liam and Sheila celebrated their Ruby Wedding Anniversary with their family and friends in Ionad Cois Locha, Dunlewey.

Gola Island Festival

The annual festival on Gola Island will take place this weekend. The festival will kick off  tomorrow (Saturday) at 2p.m. with the official opening. This will be followed at 2.30p.m. with a 5K race or walk on Bealach na Gaeltachta – Slí Ghabhla. At 3.30pm there are exhibitions at an Teach Beag on the island. This exhibition will consist of Original Gola Island art and the 1911 census for the island. At 4p.m. there will be Poetry Reading and Story Telling.
The festival continues on Sunday with a sightseeing trip around Gola, Umphin, Inis Meáin, and Inish Sheerer. Additional information regarding the festival is available from Coiste Forbartha Ghabhla at 087 41-34244 or 086 7979336.

Campa na nÓg

A Concert with ‘Margo’

Soon to celebrate 50 years in the music business the world renowned Country singer Margo, sister of Daniel O Donnell, has confirmed a one off concert in Áislann Rann na Feirsde on the August 10 with support from ‘Pride of the West’ Frank McCaffrey. Sale of Work

A sale of work in aid of St. Patrick’s Church, Bunbeg will be held in the Old School beside the church tomorrow (Saturday) at 3p.m.  There will be a wide selection of goods ranging from brick a brac, books, vegetables etc for sale and everyone is welcome to come along.

The late Mary Reilly

The death occurred at the Mater Hospital last week of Mrs. Mary Reilly, who was originally from Bunbeg. The deceased, who was born in the house close to the Clady River Bridge at Bunbeg, was affectionately known locally as Mary ‘Mhaighreada’.  Her remains were taken from Dublin to the home of her nephew, Enda McClean’s in Crichna, Malin for waking.  Her funeral mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Lagg, Malin. Internment took place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to her family circle and relatives.

Bog Fire at Corveen

There was a fire at the bogland in Corveen on Saturday evening last. The Gaoth Dobhair Fire Brigade was called and due to their swift action a large quantity of turf valued at thousands of euro, ready to be brought home was saved. People are urged not to be lighting outside fires at this time of year.

Death of Paddy Devenney

The death took place at Letterkenny General Hospital on Friday morning last of Paddy Devenney, of Doire na Mainseár, Annagry.
A son of Eibhlín Sam and the late Brianaí Phaidí Hiudaí Ó Duibheannaigh , the deceased was well  known in Gaoth Dobhair. For many years he worked with the road resurfacing team of Donegal County Council and prior to that he worked in the former G.T. Carpets plant on the Derrybeg Industrial Estate. Known in the locality as Paidí Eibhlíne, he was aged only 61 years at the time of his death. He has many relatives living in Gaoth Dobhair. His sister, Sorcha Coll, lives in Knockastolar, Bunbeg.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, two daughters, two sons, grand-children, his mother, Eibhlín, five sisters and two brothers, and a wide circle of relatives and friends. His funeral mass was celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Annagry on Monday and interment took place afterwards in the new cemetery.

Monster Bingo

A monster bingo which is part of Feile Chnoc Fola  will be held in Ionad Pobail Chnoc Fola on Sunday night.
A grand total of €2,200 will be paid out on the night. Single books will cost €10, while double books will be available for €15. At last Sunday night’s bingo in Cnoc Fola the following won €100 each: Róisín Gallagher, Magheraclogher, Mickey McGeady, Meenalough, Cnoc Fola, Anne Diver, Magheraclogher, William McFadden, Cnoc Fola, Kathleen McGarvey, Meenaniller and Alan McFadden also of Meenaniller.

Dunlewey Festival

It has been announced that Jason Black, Letterkenny will officially open this year’s Féile an Eargail in Dunlewey. Jason, will relate his story of how he scaled Mount Everest and made the impossible possible. The official opening will take place in the community centre on Friday 2nd August at 7.30p.m.

Official Opening of Refurbished Pier

The official opening of the refurbished pier at Port an Chruinn, on Gola Island will take place this Sunday at 2.p.m. The opening ceremony will be performed by Dinny McGinley, Minister of State of the Department of Arts, Culture and Gaeltacht Affairs. This event is part of Féile Ghabhla which is held this weekend.

On Visit from Rome

Currently on a visit to his home in Srath na Corcra, Derrybeg is Monsignor Kevin Gillespie. Monsignor Gillespie is based at the Vatican in Rome and we hope his visit to Gaoth Dobhair will be an enjoyable one.
