Gweedore Notes – 22nd February 2013

The late Mrs. Gracie Sweeney

Deeply regretted is the death of Mrs. Gracie Sweeney, Middle Dore which occurred at Falcarragh Nursing Unit on Friday morning 8th February.  Better known locally as Gracie Bheag Mhary Antoin John [née Boyle], she was married to Eddie Neddie Beag Sweeney, who was also a native of Dore.  He passed away in April 1992.
In her youth Gracie worked for some time in Belfast. She also spent some years working in a knitting factory in Bunbeg. Like so many young people, Gracie emigrated to Scotland, later married and settled in Falkirk. Some thirty years ago the family moved back to Gaoth Dobhair and built a bungalow in Middle Dore. She spent some years working in Sam Spudz on the Gaoth Dobhair Industrial Estate.
A keen gardener, she had the most spectacular garden in front of her house. It was full of shrubs and colourful flowers. Many hours were spent by her in the same garden tending and caring for the array of beautiful flowers. Visitors travelling this road frequently stopped to photograph her colourful garden. She could be described as a very artistic person. She was a devoted mother, grand – mother and sister and her passing has left a deep void in the family circle. Her demise marks the third death which occurred in Middle Dore within a space of a few months. In October, Gracie’s neighbour Sarah Eddie McGee died, while another, neighbour, Biddy Eoghain Éamoinn Gallagher passed away in December.
There was a very large and representative attendance at the removal of remains, wake and funeral, which was a very clear indication of the high esteem in which she and her family are held. Her concelebrated Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Derrybeg on Sunday 10th February at 1.00p.m.
The main celebrant of the mass was her nephew and godson, Fr. Patrick Boyle, P.P., of St. Eunan’s Parish in Clydebank. The concelebrants were: An Dr. Oirmh. Pádraig Ó Baoighill, Sagart Paróiste Ghaoth Dobhair,  Fr. Seán Ó Gallchóir, P.P., Gortahork and Fr. Brian Ó Fearraigh, C.C., and Séiplíneach Phobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair.
The first lesson was read by: Fran Coyle, while Deirbhile Sweeney read the second lesson. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by her three sisters, Sarah, Sheila and Nancy. Member of St. Mary Church Choir performed during the mass and the tin whistle was pleased by Eileen Sweeney [niece of her late husband, Eddie].  Following the mass she was laid to rest in Magheragallon cemetery.
Predeceased by her husband, Eddie, brothers, Antoin and Manus and sister, Mary she is survived by three sons, Éamonn, Manus John, and Freddie [all living in Scotland]. Daughter, Marian Woods, [Middle Dore], brother, Danny [living in Glasgow] and three sisters, Sarah McCole, [Meenacuing], Sheila Boyle, [Glasgow] and Nancy Bheag Gallagher [Upper Cotteen], grand children, in laws , family circle and relatives, to all of whom deep sympathy is extended.

Golden Wedding Anniversary

Congratulations to Mr. Dermot and Mrs. Maggie Gallagher, Dunlewey who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the weekend. Maggie [née Walsh] is originally from Ardveen, Crolly, while her husband, Dermot is a Dunlewey native. They were married in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, North Street, Glagow on the 16th February, 1963. The bestman was Dermot’s brother, Hughie, sadly now deceased, while the bridesmaid was Mary McConnell, sister of the bride who is also now deceased. Maggie and Dermot spent their honeymoon touring Ireland. They have a family of seven children: Mary [Dunlewey], Maurice, [Boston], Brian Mór, [Boston], Paul, [Co. Clare], Dermot, [Derry], Angela. [Belfast] and Stephen, [Dunlewey]. Another child died at an early age. They also have eleven grandchildren. The family came together at the week end to celebrate their joyous event. It was also Maggie’s birthday at the weekend, which meant it was a double celebration for the family.
