Dinneár Chinn Bliana

Whist Drive

At the whist in the school on Monday 14th January, Bríd Kearney, Mín na Cuinge won with a score of 170 points won top score prize. First lady’s prize with a score of 168 points was won by Mary Gallagher, Dungloe, while second lady’s prize with a score of 168 was won by Mary O’Donnell, Dungloe. First gent’s prize with a score of 169 was won by Charlie Gallagher, Falcarragh and second gent’s prize with a score of 165 was won by Dónall Ó Fearraigh, Mín an Iolar. Anne Diver, Magheraclogher  with a score of 86 points won the prize for the highest score in the first half, while Winnie McGee, Cotteen, Derrybeg with 84 points had the highest score in the second half.  Whist is held in the school every Monday night and everyone is welcome.

The late Bríd McCabe

The death occurred at Letterkenny General Hospital on Monday 14th January of Miss Bríd McCabe, 6, Coughlan Avenue, Frosses. Bríd, who was aged in her eighties, was well known in Gaoth Dobhair as she served as housekeeper for the late  Canon Aodh Ó Cnáimhsí, who served as Parish Priest  in Gaoth Dobhair from 1977 to 1985. Bríd is survived by her sister, Cassie O’Donnell who lives in Frosses. Her remains were removed to Frosses on Wednesday evening and her funeral was held on Thursday after Requiem Mass.

Ladies Annual General Meeting

The annual general of the Gaoth Dobhair ladies golf took place recently in the clubhouse, Magheragallon and the following committee was elected: Lady Captain, Deirdre Gallagher, Meenaniller, Honorary Secretary, Marian Curran, Magheragallon Road, treasurer, Mary lucy Ferry, Brinaleck, Competition Secretary, Bríd Kearney, Meenacuing assisted by kitty D Doherty, Bunbeg, Handicap Secretary, Kathleen Rodgers, Lunniaghbeg, and Marie Kelly, Meenaniller, Press Officer, Sheila Gallagher, Cotteen, Derrybeg and Prize Buyer, Moya O’Donnell. Committee, Marie Hickey, Strand Road, Magheraclogher and Sarah Gallagher, Derrybeg.

Peace Mass

A Peace Mass will be celebrated in Ramelton on Thursday 31st January. A bus will leave Gaoth Dobhair at 6.45p.m. To book a seat on the bus please ring Máire at 074 95 31055 (during working hours only) or John at 086-3646787.

Information Night on Prostrate Cancer

The Break Free From Cancer Group will hold an information night on Wednesday, 28th January at 8pm in Ionad Naomh Pádraig Dore. The theme of the night will be prostrate cancer. Ionad Lae Ghaoth Dobhair will present a cheque of €1,000 to the group on the night and Relay for Life will launch the Gaoth Dobhair branch of their community based initiative. Concert

A concert in aid of Sr. Consilio of Cuan Mhuire will take place in Ionad Cois Locha, Dunlewey on Saturday 2nd February at 8.30p.m. The concert will feature the young talented group “An Crann Óg”. Tickets priced at €10 are available from the following outlets: Molloy’s Supermarket, Derrybeg, Matt Bonar’s Shop, Bunbeg or from the Crannóg, Derrybeg [telephone 95 32208]. Cuan Mhuire is Ireland’s largest provider of residential detox and treatment of addiction suffers.

Month’s Mind Mass

The month’s mind mass for the late Owen Johnny Neill Óig Ferry, Cnoc Fola will be celebrated in St. Colmcille Church, Cnoc Fola this Friday at 7.00p.m.

Church Gate Collection

A church gate collection in aid of the sick who will be travelling on this year’s Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place this weekend [Saturday and Sunday] outside the following churches in the parish, St. Colmcille, Cnoc Fola, St. Mary’s, Derrybeg, St. Patrick’s, Meenaweal and the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunlewey. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

Scór na nÓg

Congratulations to the Crannóg’s Ballad Group representing CLG Ghaoth Dobhair who won the Ulster Final of Scór na nÓg in Derry on Saturday 9th February.The members of the group are: Eimear Nic Comhaill, Eva Ní Dhoibhlinn, Joanne Ní Cheallaigh, Catríona Ni Ghribin and Cathal Ó Cuireáin. They will now go on to represent Gaoth Dobhair  and Donegal in the All Ireland Final  in Derry. Maith sibh, comhghairdeachas  agus ádh mór!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Raymond McGonagle, Carrickboyle, Derrybeg who won €12,000 recently on the National Lottery programme,  “Winning Streak” on RTÉ1. Raymond who is a son of Eddie and Anne McGonagle was selected to spin the small wheel on the programme. Raymond is based in Letterkenny.

Pilgrimage to Medjugorje

A pilgrimage to Medjugorje has been organised for October. It will be held from the 12th to the 19th October. Award for Housing Estate

The prize giving awards for the Best Kept Council Housing Estates were presented at a function in Dungloe. Among the winners was Clos Mhuire, the estate at Stranacorkra, Derrybeg.  This estate got an award for the Best Small Housing Estate. This competition takes place each year and is held to entice residents living on the estates to keep their place neat and tidy.

Cnoc Fola Bingo

At last Sunday night’s bingo in Ionad Pobail Chnoc Fola Frances Gallagher, Machaire Rabhartaigh won €130 and the following won €100 each: Jimmy Herrity, Killult, Gortahork, Frances Gallagher, Dore, Veronica Friel, Srath Máirtín, Lea Marie Doohan, Curransport and Bríd Mulrainey, Gortahork.

Relay for Life

FSS – HSE – Self Management Course

Beidh an FSS ag soláthar cúrsa féin bhainistíochta do dhaoine a bhfuil aon chineál coinníollacha sláinte acu agus do Cúramóirí daoine le coinníollacha sláinte. The Month’s mind mass for the late Sadie McGarvey, Knockastolar will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Derrybeg this  Friday at 8.30a.m.

Traditional Night

A traditional night in honour of St. Brigid will take place in Ionad Lae Ghaoth Dobhair at Derrybeg on Thursday 31st January.  Plenty of rushes will be available for making crosses in honour of the saint.  If you are unfamiliar in this craft expert cross makers will be present to guide you along. There will be plenty of music and craic and a pleasant enjoyable night is guaranteed. Part of the night will include the serving of brúitíní [mashed potatoes] prepared in the traditional style.
