Death of Séamus Ferry

One of Gaoth Dobhair’s best known characters, Séamus Ferry, of Meenacuing passed away suddenly on Monday, February 27th. He was better known as Oisín. Aged 69 years, he was the youngest member of his family. His parents who predeceased him were, Jimmy John Mhiley Ferry and Annie [née Roarty], who hailed from the Dunlewey district. Oisín lived life to the full, and was very well known. He lived in the family home and loved to socialise. He was a familiar figure in the area and was liked by everyone and was everyone’s friend. He was an excellent dancer and was a very good jig dancer. He would frequently give a demonstration of his dancing skills and became better known as The Dancing King of Gaoth Dobhair. A few years ago he was filmed during his dancing routine in a local pub and was posted on YouTube. In his youth Oisín spent some time working in Edinburgh and in London. He also spent some years working at the former ESB generating station in Meenacuing which was located a short distance from his home.
He was waked at the home of his sister, Tess Gallagher in Meenacuing. There was a very large and representative attendance at both his wake and funeral, a clear indication of the high esteem in which he was held.
His funeral mass was celebrated in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunlewey on Thursday 1st March. The celebrant was Fr. Brian Ó Fearraigh, Seiplineach Phobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair and concelebrant was An Dr. Oirmh. Pádraig Ó Baoighill, Sagart Paróiste Ghaoth Dobhair. The lessons were read by Orla McGee and Áine McNulty [great nieces]. Young Áine also sang beautifully during the funeral ceremony. Following the mass he was interred in the adjoining cemetery alongside his parents. The family wish to convey their deep appreciation to everyone for their kind support and help during the wake and funeral.
Predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Mrs. Madge Mangan, and brother, Patrick Ferry, who passed away two years ago, he is survived by three sisters, Bridget Jordon, [Meenacuing], Ellen O’Dwyer, [Ballina, Falcarragh], and Tess Gallagher [Meenacuing and Edenburgh], two brothers, Danny Ferry, [Fanaboy, Gortahork] and John who lives in Newcastle, nephews, nieces, in laws, family circle and wide circle of friends, to all of whom sympathy is extended.
