The late Cormac O’Brien

The death occurred at his home in Meenacladdy on the 20th February of Cormac O’Brien. Aged 80 years, he was better known in the locality as Cormac Dhónail Chormaic. The deceased spent periods working in Scotland, England as well as Dublin. He was a kind and very friendly individual and he will be sadly missed. He was waked at his home. His funeral mass was celebrated in St. Colmcille Church, Cnoc Fola on Ash Wednesday and afterwards his interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. The main celebrant of the mass was Fr. Donnchadh Ó Baoill, C.C., Cnoc Fola and concelebrant was Fr. Seán Ó Gallchóir, P.P., Gortahork.
The lessons were read by, Máire Duggan [relative] and Sheila O’Grady [grand niece]. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by: Maggie Duggan [who cared for Cormac during his illness], her daughter, Michelle Duggan, Nan Mackintosh [sister] and Noreen O’Grady [grand niece].
This was the second bereavement suffered by the O’Brien family in recent weeks. Five weeks ago, Cormac’s sister, Mrs. Mary Murray, who resided in Keeldrum, Gortahork, passed away. He was also predeceased by his sister, Gráinne who died at an early age and also by his sister, Maggie Birmingham, who lived in Dublin.
He is survived by three sisters, Bridget Tourish, living in Fife, Scotland, Cathy O’Brien in Kent and Nan Mackintosh, living in Birmingham, nephews, nieces, family circle, relatives and friends, to all of whom deep sympathy is extended.

Whist Drive

At the weekly whist drive in Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg on Monday 20th February, Nóirín Houston, Gortahork with a score of 178 points won top score prize. First lady’s prize with a score of 175 points was won by Kathleen Mulhern, Gorthork and second lady’s prize with a score of 168 points was won by Mary McGinley, Machaire Rabhartaigh. First gent’s prize with a score of 172 points was won by Noel Hamer, Meenaniller, while second lady’s prize with a score of 166 points was won by Tony McFadden, Meenderry, Falcarragh. Susan McCole, Dore with 87 points had the highest score in the first half, while Hughie Duffy, Annagry with 88 points won the prize for the highest score in the second half.

Lotto

In the Scoil Bhríde, Meenacladdy lotto draw the jackpot prize was not one. Margaret McFadden, Cnoc Fola won a consolation prize. In the next draw the jackpot prize will be 3,500 euro.

Club 100

In the Club 100 CLG Ghaoth Dobhair draw for the month of February the lucky winners were: 400 euro, Peter McGee, Dore, 250 euro, Daithí Mac Robeart, Ballindrait, Bunbeg, 150 euro, Bronagh O’Donnell, Knockastolar. The following won 100 euro each: Máire Bean Uí Bhaoill, Machaire Chlochair and Jerry Rua Gallagher, Knockastolar.

Lotto

In the CLG Ghaoth Dobhair lotto draw at the weekend the jackpot prize was not won. The following won consolation prize: Bríd P. Ni Ghallchóir, Cotteen and William Boyle, Ballindrait. In the next draw the jackpot prize will be 650 euro.

Table Quiz

At the weekly Cumann na gCurach table quiz held in Teach Sheáin Óig, Middletown on Thursday last the senior section was won by a team of: Hugh Gerald Gallagher, Martin Friel and Éamonn Collum. The novice section was won by a team consisting of: Sheila Curran, Michael Roarty, Patrick McGarvey and Ranata McCole.

Siúlóid Cuimhneachán Colm Clancy

The Siúlóid Cuimhneachán Colm Clancy (Memorial Walk) will take place on Sunday 1st April in Glenveagh National Park. The walkers will be picked up at the car park at the Visitors Centre, bussed to Gartan and will walk the Lough Inshagh Walk back to Glenveagh Castle where there will be refreshments. Proceeds of the walk will be shared between Cara Malawi www.caramalawi.ie and Ubwino Wa Amayi www.ubwino.org . (Fr Owen O’ Donnell whose roots are in Donegal was a founder of Ubwino). Draw for a Car

The Gaoth Dobhair Credit Union are again running a draw this year and the top prize is a Hyundai ix20 car plus a number of other cash prizes up for grabs. It is a members’ only draw and the tickets cost 50 euro. Tickets available from the Derrybeg and Falcarragh offices and the draw will take place live on the Barr Scéalta programme on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Friday 9th March between 11.05a.m and mid day. Payments can be made by instalments but subscriptions must be paid in full in advance of draw.

Mórshiúl

Bhí thar 700 duine i láthair ar an mórshiúl a d’eagraigh Craobh an Earagail dén INTO i nGaoth Dobhair ar an Satharn seo caite. Bhí ionadaithe ansin ó scoileanna i nGaoth Dobhair, Cloch Cheann Fhaola, na Rossa, Árainn Mhór, an Tearmainn, Gartan agus neart ceantair eile.
Thosaigh an mórshiúl ag ionad an Acadaimh ar an Screabán agus shiúl an slua go dtí oifig Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta, Donnchadh Mac Fhionnlaíoch TD. Rinne Cathal Ó Fearraigh, Príomhoide Scoil Chonaill an Bhun Bhig(an post a bhí ag an Aire Stáit é féin sula ndeachaigh sé leis an pholaitaíocht) oráid dén scoth don slua. Leag sé amach na deacrachtaí ollmhóra atá ann do na scoileanna beaga tuaithe agus Gaeltachta muna ndéantar na ciorruithe a tharraingt síár a mar a rinneadh leis na scoileanna DEIS i mBÁC. Tithe Féinfhreastail

Success for Pobal Scoil

The students from Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair swept the boards at the Feile Áitiúil Scoildrámaíochta held in the Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny on Sunday. They staged two dramas, “Caitlín Ní hUallacháin” and “Arís”. Both dramas received nomination to go forward to Ulster Drama Festival which will be staged in the Grianán Theatre on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th March. The drama, “Caitlín Ní hUllacháin” won top award [Scoth léiriú na Féile] and they were presented with Corn Áine Nic Giolla Bhríde. The cast of this drama were: Eva Ní Dhoiblinn, Ciarán Mac a’ Gheimhridh, Gavin Mac Giolla Bhríde, Noel Mac Pháidín,  Rosie Nic Gairbheith and Maria Ní Ghallchóir. Jack Ó Gallchóir, Mín an Iolair, received the Best Actor Award for his role as Feidhlimidh in the play, “Arís”, while Rosie Nic Gairbheith, Knockastolar,  was awarded Best Actress for her playing part of the old woman in “Caitlín Ní hUallacháin”.
The cast of “Arís” are, Emma Ní Fhíoruisce, Shane Mac Grianna,  Proinsias Ó Gallchóir and Jack Ó Gallchóir. Congratulations to everyone involved.
We also congratulate, Joseph Mac Aoidh, Lunniagh who was awarded Best Young Actor Award. Joseph, a pupil in Scoil Adhamnáin Naofa, Lunniagh got his award for his role in the newly written drama, “Tír na nÓg”. This drama was written by Manus Ó Duibhir, a teacher in the school.

Registration

There will be a registration of new pupils for the school year 2012 to 2013 in Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg on Thursday 8th March between 1.00 and 3.00p.m.  Please bring your child’s birth cert, baptism cert and PPS number on the day.
